2017 – The New Year is the time to enjoy winter’s natural wonders on Mt. Tam and in Muir Woods. Look for spawning salmon – ask a Muir Woods ranger where to look – mushrooms displays, and more.

Early JanuaryWhale Watching – During the first two weeks of the new year, you’ll find as many as 200 pregnant gray whales a day migrating south towards the calving lagoons of Baja California. A good viewing spot is the Muir Beach Overlook. From the MHI, go left on Panoramic. After 2 miles, turn right on Muir Woods Road. Proceed until it dead-ends on Hwy. 1, then turn right and keep an eye out for the Muir Beach Overlook on your left at the hill’s crest.

Early MarchWhale Watching – During the first two weeks of March, gray whales and their calves are migrating north towards their summer feeding grounds of the Bering Sea. For a good viewing spot, head west on Muir Woods road until in dead-ends on Hwy. 1, turn right and keep an eye out for the Muir Beach Overlook on your left at the hill’s crest.

Spring

Spring-fed waterfalls, lush green meadows and mountain wildflowers are found this time of year on Mt. Tamalpais. Red-tailed Hawks fly above our decks and this is the season they begin mating and nest building. This is accompanied by spectacular aerial displays: circling and soaring to great heights in our sky above, they fold their wings and plummet to treetop level.

Mid-MarchAudbon Canyon Ranch Opens– Observe Great Blue Herons and Egrets building nests at the Audubon Ranch. To get there, exit right from the inn, heading down Panoramic Hwy. When it dead-ends on Hwy. 1, turn right. Between Stinson and Bolinas, the ranch is found on your right.The ranch is open during nesting season, mid-March through early July. www.egret.org

Wed. June 21 Summer Solstice – Celebrate the longest day of the year at Muir Beach, on the continent’s edge. Storytelling, songs, and fun around a bonfire, hosted by a GGNRA ranger. Dress warmly and bring a mug. 6-8pm.
June – July 2 Audubon Canyon Ranch – Come see dozens of egrets and their chicks nesting in redwood grove overlooking Bolinas Lagoon. Peer into nests through scopes from a mid-canyon viewing platform, learn from volunteer naturalists, and watch young birds take their first flights. www.egret.org
Mid-August Perseids Meteor Showers – Book a room and stay up late to see the showers. Best viewing is when the moon is new or a thin crescent.
 

Late Summer / Fall

The weather is glorious and it’s festival season in our local villages.

Sat Sept. 16 & Sun. Sept. 17 Mill Valley Arts Festival Exhibits by about 150 artists, sculptures, jewelry makers and photographers. Local musicians perform. Held among the redwoods in downtown Old Mill Park. www.mvfaf.org

Oct. 5- 15 Mill Valley Film Festival. Known as a filmmakers’ festival, the annual Mill Valley Film Festival offers a non-competitive environment for exhibiting independent and world cinema, many of which are premieres. Following a film’s showing, directors and some actors appear onstage to discuss it and answer questions. Thurs. Dec. 21Winter Solstice – For thousands of years, ancient cultures celebrated the shortest day of the year with woodland nymph tales, yule logs and mistletoe. Why should we be any different? Get in the spirit with a winter solstice walk along luminaria-lit trails at Muir Woods.

Sun. Dec. 31 New Year’s Eve – A romantic New Year’s Eve dinner is being planned for the two of you. MENU.  The next morning start the New Year off right with an invigorating hike on Mt. Tamalpais.
